T-Shirt Size Chart
There is no standard t-shirt size chart. Every brand drafts its own, and the same nominal size differs between them by more than most people expect. Rather than invent a chart, this page shows what a size actually measures across the 20 styles we stock from 6 brands, taken from each brand’s own published spec sheet.
The short version: the chest is remarkably consistent. Every t-shirt charted here measures exactly 22″ across at L, 24″ at XL and 26″ at 2XL, across five brands. The disagreements are at the ends of the range — Next Level runs a full inch wider at S and M, Comfort Colors narrower at 3XL.
Length is where they part company. At L the shirts here run from 29⅜″ to 31″, because Alstyle grades 2″ between S, M and L where everyone else grades 1″. And the brands disagree further still about which body a given size is for, which is on each style’s own page.
What each size measures, across every t-shirt
The shirt laid flat, measured across one inch below the armhole — half the way round, across the 16 t-shirt styles here. Sweatshirts are excluded: they are cut several inches wider at the same nominal size and would be the outlier at every row. Where a size shows one figure, every style that offers it agrees.
| Size | Chest, laid flat | Body length | Where it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 16" – 17 1/2" | 26" – 27 3/4" | Gildan 64000, Alstyle 1701 — narrower at 16" |
| S | 18" – 19" | 26 5/8" – 28 3/4" | Next Level 3600, Next Level 6210, Next Level 6410 — wider at 19" |
| M | 20" – 20 1/2" | 28" – 29 3/4" | Next Level 3600, Next Level 6210, Next Level 6410 — wider at 20 1/2" |
| L | 22" | 29 3/8" – 31" | all agree |
| XL | 24" | 30 3/4" – 32" | all agree |
| 2XL | 26" | 31 5/8" – 33" | all agree |
| 3XL | 27 3/4" – 28" | 32" – 34" | Comfort Colors 1717, Comfort Colors 6030 — narrower at 27 3/4" |
| 4XL | 28" – 30" | 32 3/4" – 35" | Bella+Canvas 3005 — narrower at 28" |
| 5XL | 32" | 35" – 36" | all agree |
| 6XL | 34" | 36" – 37" | all agree |
Every figure is transcribed from a brand spec sheet and dated on the style’s own page. Brands revise their specs; measure a sample before a large run.
How to measure a shirt you already have
The quickest way to buy the right size is to measure a shirt that already fits, lay it flat and compare it with the tables below rather than guessing from a letter.
- Chest
- Lay the shirt flat, smooth out the wrinkles, and measure straight across from seam to seam one inch below the armhole. That figure is half the way round the shirt, which is the convention every spec sheet on this site uses.
- Body length
- From the highest point of the shoulder, next to the collar, straight down to the finished hem at the back. This is the measurement that decides where a print sits.
- Body versus garment
- If you are measuring a person rather than a shirt, the tape goes all the way around the fullest part of the chest and the number roughly doubles. Every style page shows both tables so the two never get mixed up.
