Yarn Dyed

Dyeing the yarn before the fabric is knit or woven. It is the only way to build colour into the structure itself, which is how stripes, plaids, chambray, end-on-end and heather effects are made — the pattern cannot be printed on afterwards and look the same on both sides. Yarn-dyed colour also penetrates the fibre fully, so it resists fading better than surface dyeing. It costs more and commits the mill to a colour before anything is knit, so yarn-dyed styles come in fewer colourways and longer lead times.
