Chambray
Fabric — one of 56 in the glossary
A lightweight plain-weave cotton woven with a coloured warp and a white weft, which is what gives it its characteristic soft, faded appearance — the surface reads as a paler version of the warp colour because half the yarns on show are white. It is often mistaken for denim, but denim is a twill and chambray is a plain weave, which makes chambray lighter, smoother and far more suited to a shirt than to a pair of trousers.
Chambray is not denim
This is the confusion worth clearing up first, because the two look similar at a glance and behave completely differently.
Denim is a twill: the weft passes under two or more warp yarns at a time, which produces the diagonal ridge you can see on any pair of jeans and makes a heavy, hard-wearing fabric. Chambray is a plain weave — one over, one under — which makes a lighter, smoother, more even cloth.
Both are usually woven with a coloured warp and a white weft, which is why both fade the way they do and why both read as blue. The construction is the difference, and it is the reason chambray makes a comfortable summer shirt and denim makes trousers.
Why it looks faded when it is new
In a plain weave, half the visible yarns at any point are warp and half are weft. With a dyed warp and a white weft, the eye averages the two, so the fabric reads noticeably lighter than the yarn it was dyed with.
That is a structural effect and not a wash treatment. A chambray shirt looks softly faded on the day it is made.
It also means the colour is genuinely in the yarn rather than on the surface, so it wears evenly rather than patchily.
Printing and decorating on it
It is a woven shirting rather than a knit, so it behaves like a button-down: flat, stable and easy to hoop for embroidery, which is what most decorated chambray gets.
For screen printing, the plain weave gives an even surface, but the white weft shows through a thin ink deposit and lightens the print. A heavier deposit or an underbase solves it.
Buttons, plackets and pockets are where the print area actually ends. Measure the flat area on the garment rather than assuming a shirt-sized print will fit.
Common questions
- What is chambray fabric?
- A lightweight plain-weave cotton woven with a coloured warp and a white weft. The mix of coloured and white yarns on the surface is what gives it its soft, faded look.
- Is chambray the same as denim?
- No. They are woven differently — denim is a twill with a diagonal ridge, chambray is a plain weave. Both typically use a coloured warp and white weft, which is why they look alike, but chambray is much lighter and smoother.
- Is chambray good for summer?
- Yes, and it is one of its main uses. The plain weave is lighter and more breathable than a twill of the same yarn, which is why chambray shirts read as warm-weather wear.
- Does chambray shrink?
- It is cotton, so yes, unless it has been preshrunk. As a woven rather than a knit it tends to move less dramatically than a jersey tee.
