Wicking

The movement of moisture along and through a fabric by capillary action, pulling sweat off the skin and spreading it over a wide surface where it can evaporate. It is a function of fibre shape and fabric structure rather than a coating — polyester wicks because it absorbs almost nothing, so liquid travels along the fibre instead of soaking into it. Cotton does the opposite: it absorbs and holds moisture, which is why a wet cotton tee stays wet. Some wicking is achieved with a chemical finish, and those finishes can wash out and can interfere with ink adhesion.

Capillary action, not absorption

Wicking is liquid travelling along the outside of fibres through the narrow channels between them, drawn by surface tension. It is the same effect that pulls paraffin up a candle wick, which is where the word comes from.

Absorption is the opposite: liquid soaking into the fibre itself. A fibre that absorbs well wicks badly, because the moisture stops travelling as soon as it is taken up.

This is why polyester wicks and cotton does not. Polyester absorbs almost nothing — under one per cent of its weight — so water has nowhere to go but along the fibre. Cotton absorbs many times that and holds it.

Structure does as much as fibre

Fibre cross-section matters: yarns extruded with grooved or multi-lobed profiles have more surface channels, so they move more liquid faster than a round filament of the same polymer.

So does the knit. Channelled, waffled or two-layer constructions increase surface area and give the moisture somewhere to spread, which is what actually gets it evaporating.

A shirt can therefore wick well or badly while being 100% polyester either way. The fibre makes it possible; the construction decides how well.

Structural against topical

Some wicking is a finish — a chemical applied to the surface of an otherwise ordinary fabric to make it move moisture. It works, and it washes out, usually within twenty to fifty washes.

The tell is the fibre content. A cotton-rich fabric claiming to wick is relying on a finish. A polyester knit with visible texture is doing it structurally.

Topical finishes are also the ones that interfere with decoration, because a coating that changes how the surface handles water changes how it handles ink.
