Welt Cuffs
Construction — one of 70 in the glossary
Cuffs on a short-sleeved garment made from a single layer of rib with a finished edge, knitted in a bolder, heavier construction than an ordinary 1x1 rib. They are most familiar on polos and on retro athletic tees, where the banded sleeve end reads as a deliberate design choice rather than a plain hem.
A band instead of a hem
Most short sleeves end in a folded, stitched hem. A welt cuff ends in a knitted rib band instead, finished at the edge so it needs no hem.
The rib is knitted in a bolder construction than the 1x1 used on a collar, which gives it more body and stops it looking like a collar band that wandered.
Single layer is the defining part — a double-layer banded cuff is a different construction and heavier.
Why it is used
It grips the arm slightly rather than hanging, which gives a neater line on a polo and the specific retro look on an athletic tee.
It also finishes the sleeve without a visible row of hem stitching, which some designs want.
The trade-off is that a rib band eventually loses recovery and can go slack, where a hemmed sleeve simply stays as it was.
For a decorator
The usable flat area on a sleeve is shorter, because the band is not printable and the transition to it is not flat.
Sleeve prints have to sit above the cuff with clearance, and on a short sleeve that leaves less room than people expect.
Measure the flat area on a sample rather than working from the sleeve length on a spec sheet.
Common questions
- What is a welt cuff?
- A cuff made from a single layer of rib with a finished edge, knitted in a bolder construction than an ordinary 1x1 rib. It ends the sleeve with a band instead of a hem.
- What is the difference between a welt cuff and a hemmed sleeve?
- A hemmed sleeve is folded and stitched; a welt cuff is a knitted rib band. The band grips the arm slightly and gives a neater or more retro line.
- Can you print on a sleeve with a welt cuff?
- Above the cuff, yes, but the band is not printable and the transition is not flat, so the usable area is shorter than the sleeve length suggests.
