Sublimation Shirts: Which Blanks Actually Work
Sublimation is the most restrictive decoration method in common use, and almost every failed sublimation job is a blank problem rather than a printing problem. The dye needs polyester to bond to and it cannot print white, so the shirt decides the outcome before the press is switched on.
We sell blanks and do not decorate them, so this is about the half you buy from us: what will take sublimation, what will not, and what the compromises actually look like on a finished shirt.
Two hard limits, and they are not negotiable
Sublimation dye turns from solid to gas under heat and bonds into polyester fibre. Cotton has nothing for it to bond to. On a cotton shirt the colour sits on the surface, looks acceptable for about one wash, and then goes.
The second limit is that sublimation dye is transparent. There is no white ink, and the dye cannot lighten what is underneath it. On a black shirt nothing appears; on a navy shirt a yellow design reads as a slightly different navy.
Both limits are properties of the chemistry rather than of the equipment. No press, temperature or paper gets around them.
What that leaves you
White or very light 100% polyester is the ideal, and it is why performance blanks dominate sublimation work. The fabric is already polyester for wicking reasons, and it is available in white in almost every style.
Poly-rich blends work in proportion to their polyester content. A 65/35 will take a print that reads slightly washed out against the same file on 100% polyester, because only the polyester fibres hold dye and the cotton ones stay pale. Some people choose that deliberately for a vintage look.
A 50/50 is roughly the floor. Below that the result is faded enough that most customers read it as a fault.
The blend look, and how to decide whether you want it
On a blend, the cotton fibres stay their original colour while the polyester takes the dye, which produces a heathered, slightly distressed print rather than a solid one. It is a real aesthetic and plenty of brands buy it on purpose.
What it is not is a solid print at a lower price. If the design has fine type, a logo that has to match a brand colour, or large flat areas of one colour, the blend look will read as a printing failure rather than a style.
The test is simple and worth doing: press one shirt from the actual blank before committing. The difference between 100% polyester and 65/35 is much larger on a finished shirt than the numbers suggest.
The things that go wrong that nobody warns you about
Polyester scorches at temperatures cotton shrugs off, and a scorched press mark is permanent. Light polyester is unforgiving of an overhot platen or a moment too long.
Seams, zips and collars leave pressure marks, because the whole garment is under heat. All-over sublimation is normally done on fabric before the shirt is sewn, which is why proper all-over shirts are bought that way rather than made from a blank.
Optical brighteners in white polyester can shift under heat, so two shirts from different lots can finish very slightly different. Order one lot for one job, as you would with anything garment-dyed.
Buying for it
Ask for the fibre content as a number rather than as a fabric name. "Performance" and "tech tee" describe a behaviour, not a composition, and some of them are blends.
Prefer white where the design allows it. Every colour underneath the print changes the colour of the print, and white is the only one that does not.
Check the finish. A topical wicking or anti-microbial finish sits on the fibre surface and can interfere with dye bonding, in the same way it interferes with ink adhesion.
Common questions
Can you sublimate on cotton shirts?
No, not permanently. Sublimation dye bonds to polyester; cotton gives it nothing to bond to, so the print washes out. Coatings and sprays sold to make cotton work leave a film on the surface and do not behave like real sublimation.
What blend do you need for sublimation?
The higher the polyester the better. 100% polyester gives a solid print, a 65/35 gives a noticeably faded one because only the polyester fibres take dye, and around 50/50 is the practical floor before most people read the result as a fault.
Can you sublimate on dark or black shirts?
No. Sublimation dye is transparent and there is no white ink, so it cannot lighten what is underneath. On a dark shirt the design effectively disappears. Dark garments need screen printing, DTF or vinyl instead.
Why does my sublimation print look faded?
Almost always fibre content. On a blend, only the polyester takes the dye and the cotton stays pale, which reads as faded. Check the blank's composition before assuming a press or profile problem.
Does sublimation crack or peel?
No. The dye is inside the fibre rather than sitting on top of it, so there is no layer to crack and no hand feel at all. It is the most durable decoration available, within its two hard limits.
