A cap whose crown sits closer to the head, with a shallower front panel than a traditional high-profile cap. The difference is the height of the front panel and how the crown is shaped: a low profile follows the skull, where a high profile stands up above the forehead. It is a shape description rather than a construction one — low-profile caps can be structured or unstructured.
Crown height, not construction
Profile describes how tall the crown stands. A high-profile cap has a front panel that rises above the forehead and holds a boxy shape; a low-profile one follows the head more closely.
Mid-profile sits between them and is the most common shape in corporate headwear.
It is independent of whether the cap is structured — a stiffened buckram front panel — or unstructured, which is about whether the crown holds its shape without a head in it. A cap can be low-profile and structured, or low-profile and soft.
What the shallower front costs
Embroidery height. A low-profile front panel gives less vertical space, so a tall logo either has to shrink or be redrawn wider.
The usable area is bounded by the seam at the top of the panel and the bill at the bottom, and on a low profile those are closer together than most people expect.
Ask for the panel height rather than assuming a design that fitted a mid-profile cap will fit.
Why people choose it
It reads as more casual and more current than a tall, boxy cap, which is most of the appeal.
It also stays on better in wind, because there is less crown for the wind to catch.
For a corporate order with a wide logo it is a good fit; for a tall crest it is the wrong cap.
