Crown

Garment — one of 27 in the glossary

The domed part of a cap that sits over the head, made from four, five or six sewn panels and joined at the top by a button. Crown height is quoted as low, mid or high profile, and whether it holds that shape depends on buckram — see structured and unstructured. It is the main decorating surface on a cap: front-panel embroidery sits on the crown, and on a six-panel cap the centre seam runs straight through the middle of that area, which is why five-panel caps are easier to embroider across the front.
