Brim

The projecting shelf of a hat that shades the face, called a bill or visor when it sticks out at the front only, as on a baseball cap. It is built from fabric over a stiff insert, and whether that insert is flat or pre-curved defines two different retail looks. For decorators the brim is a distinct decoration zone with its own machinery: embroidering one needs a specialised cap driver and a design kept shallow, because the curve and the stiffener limit how much thread the surface will take.
