Yarn deliberately spun with irregular thick and thin sections along its length, so the fabric knitted or woven from it carries a visible, uneven texture. The irregularity was originally a spinning fault, and slub fabric still reads as handmade and imperfect for exactly that reason — which is the effect people buy it for.
A fault turned into a feature
A slub is a thick section in an otherwise even yarn. Historically it meant the spinning had gone wrong, and it was a defect.
Modern slub yarn is spun deliberately, with the thick sections controlled in size and frequency so the effect is consistent across a production run.
That control is the difference between slub fabric and faulty fabric: a designed slub repeats predictably, a fault does not.
What it does to the fabric
A visible, slightly rustic texture and an uneven surface that catches light differently across the cloth.
Slight variation in dye uptake, because thicker sections take more dye — part of why slub fabrics look tonal rather than flat.
A marginally weaker fabric, since the thin sections between slubs are the weakest points.
Printing on it
The uneven surface interrupts fine detail in the same way any texture does, though a slub is shallower than a pique or an oxford.
Solid areas of ink show the texture through, which usually reads as intentional on a slub garment and occasionally does not.
Bold, simple artwork suits it. Small type and fine halftones do not.
