A high-wet-modulus rayon engineered to keep its strength and shape when wet, which ordinary viscose rayon does not. It handles like fine cotton with more lustre and better drape, and it shrinks and distorts far less in the wash than standard rayon, which is why it appears in shirting and in blends where rayon's hand is wanted without rayon's instability.
Rayon that survives being wet
Ordinary viscose rayon loses a large fraction of its strength when wet and stretches out of shape, which is why so much rayon clothing is labelled dry clean only.
Polynosic is made by a modified process that produces a more ordered molecular structure, giving high wet modulus — resistance to deformation while wet.
The practical result is a rayon you can launder. It still needs care, but it does not collapse in water the way standard viscose does.
How it behaves
It handles like a fine cotton with more lustre and a better drape, which is the reason to use it at all.
It is more dimensionally stable than viscose and shrinks less, though it is still less stable than polyester.
It takes dye readily and deeply, which is part of the lustre — but that also means more dye in the fabric to manage under heat.
In blends
It is most often met in a blend rather than alone, adding drape and lustre to cotton or polyester.
In a triblend it plays the same role as ordinary rayon, with better stability.
For decorating, treat it as the rayon fraction: rayon does not accept water-based ink the way cotton does, so a blend containing it wants testing rather than a cotton recipe carried over.
