Denier

A measure of the linear density of a continuous filament yarn: the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of it. A higher number means a heavier and generally thicker yarn, so 1,000 denier nylon is luggage fabric and 15 denier is stocking. It describes the yarn rather than the cloth, and it applies to filament fibres such as nylon and polyester rather than to spun staple yarns like cotton, which are measured in counts.
Weight per length, not thickness
Denier is the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of a continuous filament yarn. A 70 denier yarn means 9,000 metres of it weighs 70 grams.
It is a measure of linear density, so a higher number is a heavier, and in practice thicker, yarn. 1,000 denier nylon is bag and luggage fabric; 15 denier is stocking.
The odd 9,000 metre length is historical: it is the length of silk that weighs one gram at the traditional reference, scaled up.
What it does and does not tell you
It tells you about the yarn, not the fabric. A high-denier yarn woven loosely makes a lighter cloth than a lower-denier yarn woven tightly.
It applies to filament fibres — nylon, polyester — rather than to spun staple yarns like cotton, which are measured in counts instead.
For durability it is a reasonable proxy on outerwear and bags: 600D and 1000D nylon really are tougher than 210D. For apparel weight, GSM or ounces per square yard is the number you want.
Denier, thread count and GSM
Denier measures a yarn. Thread count counts yarns per inch in a woven fabric. GSM and ounces per square yard measure the finished fabric's weight per area.
They are not interchangeable and a spec sheet that gives one does not imply the others.
If you are comparing two shells or two bags, denier is the useful number. If you are comparing two tees, it is not the right measure at all.
